【Report: First Event in Sapporo】Workshop for Female Secondary School Students Considering Careers in Science and Engineering

This initiative, launched following an offer from the Sapporo Gender Equality Centre, marked its first event in snowy Hokkaido and Sapporo.

On the day, activities commenced with an icebreaker involving paper tower construction. Participants then listened together to role model talks from senior professionals working at local company and university. Lunchtime was spent in a relaxed atmosphere, enjoying boxed lunches and sweets while chatting.

The afternoon experimental workshop allowed participants to experience two of four themes. Though time was somewhat limited, it likely provided a valuable opportunity to discover the appeal of various fields.

In the ‘Envision Your Future’ session, participants discussed their career plans with working professionals and university student teaching assistants (TAs), presented their ideas, and received supportive messages from many adults.

Due to weather and scheduling constraints, the final attendance was small: four secondary school students and five parents/teachers. However, this intimacy fostered close, meaningful communication, and participant satisfaction appeared high. We extend our sincere thanks to everyone who contributed, including those involved in the preparatory work.
